The World is Our Classroom
At The Peak School, the mountains, rivers, forests, and trails surrounding our campus aren't simply places to visit; they're part of the curriculum.
Outdoor Education at Peak is intentionally designed to challenge students to grow into capable, confident young adults through real experiences.
The lessons students learn on the trail don't end when they return to campus. They shape how students approach challenging assignments, collaborate with classmates, and tackle new experiences with confidence.
Because some of life's most important lessons can't be learned sitting at a desk.
Every Trip Has a Purpose
Whether students are navigating a trail, preparing meals together at a backcountry hut, paddling a river, or climbing toward an alpine summit, every experience is intentionally designed to reinforce skills that extend well beyond the outdoors.
Students learn to:
assess risk
make thoughtful decisions
solve problems collaboratively
communicate clearly
care for one another
become comfortable being uncomfortable
Real growth comes when students learn that they can carry a heavy pack farther than they expected, solve problems when the weather changes, and support classmates through difficult moments.
Outdoor Education develops students who...
Lead with confidence
Communicate effectively
Think critically under pressure
Adapt when plans change
Support their teammates
Respect the natural world
Take ownership of challenges
Build resilience through real experiences
These aren't abstract character traits. They're practiced on every trip, every expedition, and every mountain day.
What Outdoor Education
Looks Like at Peak
Beginning Together
Every school year begins outside.
Rather than spending the first week reviewing classroom expectations, students and faculty head into the mountains for a three-day outdoor orientation camping trip.
New friendships form, returning students reconnect, and everyone starts the year building trust, teamwork, and community before academics even begin.
Learning Through Every Season
Living in Summit County means every season becomes a classroom.
Peak students experience activities such as:
Backpacking
Snowshoeing
Backcountry hut trips
Canoeing
Fly fishing
Mountain biking
Environmental field studies
Mountain Days
Each experience is selected because it creates opportunities for growth.
Summit County, CO Is Our Classroom
Located in the heart of Summit County, Peak students have immediate access to one of the country's most remarkable outdoor learning environments.
Within minutes of campus, students can explore:
alpine forests
high mountain lakes
rivers
wilderness trails
historic mining areas
ski terrain
mountain ecosystems
Instead of just reading about ecology, geology, leadership, or environmental stewardship, students experience them firsthand.
